So, it’s time to buy a new pair of earbuds

Maybe your old pair finally bit the dust. Maybe you’re upgrading fro wired to wireless. Maybe you just want better quality than you’re getting from your current pair. Whatever the reason, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can Google “wireless earbuds” and get literally thousands of results. With this many options, how do you decide which earbuds are worth your money? One way is to turn to the experts, and see what they have to say.

Today, we’ll be looking at two pairs of wireless earbuds: the Boltune BT-BH023, and the Boltune BT-BH024. Boltune is a relatively obscure manufacturer, but we’ve reviewed their products before. Now, we’re excited to review two of their newer offerings. The BT-BH023 is a bass-heavy pair of buds that’s designed for serious audiophiles. The BT-BH024 buds, meanwhile, have a more even EQ, and are more friendly for hands-free calling. But what else sets these two pairs of buds apart? Let’s take a closer look, and find out how they compare!

Boltune BT-BH023 Wireless Earbuds
The Boltune BT-BH023 Wireless Earbuds have an AirPod-style design, with extensions that hang down from the buds. The buds have a long design, which is made to seat securely, deep in your ear canal. This helps prevent sound from entering, providing a measure of noise protection. For this design to work, you need to get a good fit. Thankfully, the kit includes three different sizes of ear tips. If the default pair are too tight or too loose, you can easily switch up or down as needed.

The backs of the earbuds feature soft touch controls. You can use them to skip tracks, play or pause music, or answer and end phone calls. You can even use them to turn the active noise cancelling (ANC) on or off. In addition, the earbuds are IPX8 water-resistant. In terms of water resistance, this puts them “off the scale”. IPX7 is the highest standard rating, which means they can withstand submersion at 3 feet for 30 minutes. IPX8 doesn’t have a specific standard, but it basically means “better than IPX7”. If you’re concerned about water infiltration, the BT-BH023 buds are a solid choice.

Like most wireless earbuds, the BT-BH023 buds include a portable charging case. This case is constructed from a black ABS plastic, with a slightly textured finish for an easy grip. It has a clamshell-style design, with a groove under the lid that makes it easy to open. The overall measurements are 2.76 inches wide, 1.22 inches deep, and 1.18 inches thick. This means it’s pocket-sized, and rounded edges keep it from jabbing you in the leg. On the top, you’ll see a silver Boltune logo. On the front, there’s a row of three LEDs that indicate the current battery status.

Both the buds and the case are covered by an 18-month manufacturer’s warranty. Not only that, but you get a 90-day no-questions-asked refund window. If you don’t like the earbuds for any reason, just send them back during this time for a full refund.
Battery and Connectivity
The BT-BH023 earbuds provide 6 hours of playtime on a single charge. This should be more than enough for most people. You can get through any commute, or even run a marathon with battery life to spare. But suppose you’re going on a trip, and you don’t want to worry about battery life? In that case, the 350mAh charging case will provide you with an addition 24 hours of battery life. As a result, you get 30 hours of total battery life before you have to plug in. Go away for a weekend, and leave your charger at home if you want to. You’ll still be able to enjoy all your favorite tunes. When it comes time to recharge the charging case, the USB Type-C cable recharges it quickly. It allows you to recharge your charging case in 90 minutes, from completely dead to 100 percent.

The BT-BH023 earbuds connect to your phone with the latest Bluetooth 5.0 protocol. This is a significant upgrade from the older 4.2 protocol. It provides better stability, so you won’t have to worry about randomly getting disconnected. It also allows for higher bitrates. So you can listen to music in higher quality without needing a wired connection. Finally, it allows for automatic, instantaneous connection. Once you’ve paired your buds for the first time, they’ll automatically pair with your phone when removed from the case. The overall signal range is 66 feet. This is enough to leave your phone on a table or nightstand and grab a cup of coffee without interruption.

Sound Quality
The Boltune BT-BH023 earbuds feature large, 10mm drivers. These drivers are larger than the ones you’ll find on most wireless earbuds. As a result, the sound quality is correspondingly high in quality. You get excellent bass, much better than most earbuds. It’s powerful and punchy, without getting muddy, even at high volumes. The soundstage is also very wide. This means there’s plenty of separation between the instruments. Vocals will come through clearly, without any interference from the bass. And highs are clear, with plenty of shimmer on cymbals and strings.

As we already mentioned, the BT-BH023 earbuds utilize ANC technology. This will cut background noise by up to 28dB. That’s not quite the performance you’d get from over-the-ear ANC headphones, but it’s still impressive. Combined with the secure seal from the ear tips, it provides plenty of noise isolation. Keep in mind, though, that using the ANC feature will decrease your battery life. So if you’re in a quiet environment, it’s a good idea to turn this feature off.

For hands-free calling, the BT-BH024 buds have four mics, two on each earbud. This allows for plenty of clarity during hands-free calling. On the other hand, you can’t pair the earbuds individually. So if you use only a single bud, the battery on the other bud will still be draining.

Boltune BT-BH024 Wireless Earbuds
Like the BT-BH023 earbuds, the Boltune BT-BH024 earbuds have an AirPod-style design. However, they have a more flashy design, with grey accents on the black finish. They sit deeply in your ear canals, providing a secure fit with plenty of noise isolation. As with the last model we looked at, this requires the right set of ear tips. So switch between the three sets and see which one is the best fit for you.

The backs of the earbuds feature soft touch controls on the grey back panel. You can raise and lower the volume, play and pause music, skip tracks, and answer and end phone calls. Just like the BT-BH023 buds, the BT-BH024 buds are also IPX8 water-resistant. If you want to wear a pair of earbuds while you’re swimming, knock yourself out. You’re not going to find water-resistance better than this.

The charging case is slightly larger than the BT-BH023’s, at 2.95 inches wide, 1.54 inches deep, and 1.14 inches thick. Regardless, it’s still pocket-sized and easy to transport. It also has soft, rounded edges for comfort. The shell is unusual. Instead of a plastic finish, it has a grey cloth finish. This makes it even softer and more comfortable to carry, but difficult to clean. There’s a single LED on the front, which lets you know when the earbuds are actively charging. All of this comes with the same 18-month warranty and 90-day return window as the BT-BH023.
Battery and Connectivity
The BT-BH024 buds sport powerful internal batteries, which allow for up to 7 hours of playtime. And the 400mAh charging case provides an additional 35 hours of charge. In total, this adds up to 42 hours. If you forget to charge your buds, a 10-minute quick charge will provide enough juice for one hour of playtime. And when it’s time to charge the case, the USB Type-C cable will get the job done in 90 minutes.

Just like the BT-BH023, the BT-BH024 earbuds connect to your phone with the Bluetooth 5.0 protocol. However, they have an additional advantage that’s worth mentioning. You can pair them individually. This is useful for hands-free calling, where you want one ear free. It also means you’ll get double the battery life.

Sound Quality
The BT-BH024 earbuds sport a powerful Qualcomm QCC3026 chipset, and they support the aptX codec. This allows for exceptionally low latency, making them ideal for watching movies and videos. The EQ is significantly more balanced than the EQ on the BT-BH023. Rather than a strong bass emphasis, you get equal emphasis across the board. This isn’t ideal for dance music. But it’s great when you’re listening to other genres such as country or classical music. The soundstage is nice and wide. There’s plenty of separation between different instruments and vocals. So all in all, you’re still looking at an audiophile-worthy pair of buds.

For hands-free calling, the BT-BH024 earbuds utilize CVC 8.0 noise cancellation. This doesn’t block out background noise from what you’re hearing. Instead, it filters background noise from your own voice, so the other person can hear you more clearly. If you’re looking for earbuds for hands-free calling, you’re looking at excellent performance. When it comes to what you hear on your end, it’s going to depend on the other person’s mic. But provided their end is clear, you’ll hear them just fine.
Final Verdict
As you can see, both the Boltune BT-BH023 and the Boltune BT-BH024 have a lot to offer. What separates them is primarily what they’re designed for. The BT-BH023 is designed primarily for serious audiophiles. The powerful bass will keep you jamming along and nodding your head like few other buds in this price range. And if you want to focus on your music in private, the ANC is a great added value.

The BT-BH024 buds, on the other hand, are designed for a more all-purpose application. The soundstage is still nice and wide, but the flat EQ allows for enjoyment of different genres. In addition, the ability to pair a single earbud at a time allows for better hands-free performance. Combine that with CVC 8.0 noise cancellation, and you’ve got a solid earbud for phone calls.
